AMA teams up with Elseview on outpatient coding online courses: 4 quick notes

The American Medical Association, alongside global information analytics company Elseview, will create eLearning course content for Current Procedural Terminology.

Here's what you should know:

1. The content will pertain to codes for outpatient and office medical procedures and services.

2. Nearly five decades ago, the AMA developed the CPT code set to offer a uniform language for providers across the healthcare landscape to share medical information.

3. The AMA routinely assesses, updates and revises the CPT code set to ensure the codes accurately reflect the medical services rendered to patients.

4. Elsevier has collaborated with several healthcare associations on various co-developed products, including the Association for Nursing Professional Development, Emergency Nurses Association and American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.

"The CPT code set is constantly evolving to reflect advances in contemporary medical science and technology. Empowering a workforce to accurately code medical procedures streamlines communication across the health system, reducing administrative and rework costs," said Laurie McGraw, AMA senior vice president – health solutions. "This collaboration with Elsevier provides education to the right audience at the right time in a format that is easily grasped by learners."
