AMA on AHCA's Medicaid caps: 'A disaster'

The American Medical Association criticized the proposed Medicaid spending caps Republican senators are incorporating into the American Health Care Act, Forbes reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. Republicans believe the caps will control entitlement spending.

2. AMA believes the proposal will ultimately hurt patients and particularly treatment of poor patients.

3. AMA Board Member Carl Sirio, MD, said, "Capping Medicaid funding would be disastrous for patients by limiting medical responses to unforeseen events and medical innovations."

4. Physicians argued the caps don't account for cyclical employment or when Americans enroll into insurance programs for the poor.

5. Several major health organizations including America's Health Insurance Plans CEO Marilyn Tavenner are against the caps as well.
