Alaska to Sign Contract With Boston Consulting Firm Over Health Insurance Exchange
The state of Alaska is planning to sign a contract with a Boston-based firm to help design and implement a health insurance exchange, as mandated under federal healthcare reform, according to a News Tribune report.
Health insurance exchanges are intended to serve as online "marketplaces" where consumers can comparison shop for affordable coverage. States must submit plans for the exchanges by 2013 and implement them by 2014 — or choose to implement a federally-designed exchange.
Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell, who is challenging the constitutionality of the healthcare reform law, refused federal funds to assist with an exchange last year. The state plans to sign a contract with Public Consulting Group to evaluate the cost of the exchange and its impact on the state healthcare market, among other issues.
