AHCA puts $370B in Medicaid costs on states: 4 takeaways

President Donald Trump's American Health Care Act would shift $370 billion in Medicaid costs to states over the next 10 years, based on Congressional Budget Office estimates, according to the progressive-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Here are four takeaways:

1. The proposed law would require those states opting to expand Medicaid in 2019 to pay between 2.8 and five times more than their current cost for each new enrollee.

2. The AHCA would cap the growth of per-beneficiary federal funding for Medicaid expansion, thereby making these costs states' responsibility.

3. Over the next 10 years, estimates say this cap would reduce federal Medicaid funding by $116 billion.

4. Center on Budget and Policy Priorities reports states would be faced with the decision to either use money in their own budget to combat the difference or cease expanding Medicaid.
