Aetna, Humana extend merger agreement end date: 3 things to know

After the Hartford, Conn.-based Aetna and Louisville, Ky.-based Humana antitrust case concluded yesterday, the two companies agreed to extend the end date of the merger agreement past the expected date of the judge's decision, Reuters reports.

Here's what you should know.

1. Aetna is attempting to acquire Humana. The DoJ challenged the merger on the grounds Aetna would become a monopoly and severely challenge competition.

2. The trial was two-and-a-half weeks. Aetna's counsel ended the trial by saying the DoJ did not prove the deal would violate any antitrust laws.

3. The attorneys can make final arguments in front of a judge on Dec. 30, 2016.
