ACA enrollment falls 1.6M below Obama administration's projections: 4 notes

For 2017, an estimated 12.2 million Americans bought ACA coverage, missing the Obama administration's projections by 1.6 million people, according to Kaiser Health News.

Here are four notes:

1. In the fall 2016, the Obama administration predicted ACA 2017 enrollment would total 13.8 million Americans.

2. This year's total is slightly down from the 12.7 million Americans who purchased coverage in 2016.

3. Topher Spiro, vice president for health policy at Washington, D.C.-based Center for American Progress, told KHN he attributes the discrepancy to "the lack of a final push in marketing and outreach and promotion."

4. The Trump administration took office 10 days before the enrollment period ended and stopped the final ads promoting buying coverage on the ACA. The administration did not immediately comment to KHN regarding the 2017 enrollment figures.
