8 trends in MACRA reporting for physician practices

Black Book Research conducted a crowdsource survey of 8,845 physicians about MACRA from February to April. Here are the key trends and statistics from the report:

1. Three-quarters of the small practices with three or more physicians are seeking to purchase a Merit-based Incentive Payment System compliant technology solution by the end of this year. But 92 percent weren't aware of branded technologies from vendors supporting all MIPS registry requirements apart from their EHR.

2. Eighty-three percent of the physicians using the top eight EHR systems plan to upgrade or optimize their current systems for MIPS, while 72 percent of the physicians that aren't using EHR products from the top eight vendors reported they weren't working with vendors to prepare for MIPS.

3. Almost all — 80 percent — of the practices felt performing technology surveys was essential to see how far their current EHR and other data systems could take them; 75 percent of the small practices struggle to manage the technology basics and can't afford to pay a consultant this year.

4. By the end of the second quarter, 80 percent of the organizations that haven't developed a MACRA strategy or plan expect to choose a turnkey software or outsourcer to catch up by the end of the year; 22 percent are banking on the program being delayed.

5. Three-quarters of independent physicians are considering selling to a practice or hospital to eliminate administrative burden and capital costs, with 68 percent viewing MACRA as a burden or bust to independent practices over the next three years.

6. Sixty-four percent of hospital networked physician organizations report including performance incentives in their compensation model for MIPS.

8. Almost 70 percent of the practice managers surveyed reported knowing they needed to report on six quality measures, but just 22 percent knew they could choose the metrics they reported on.
