8 statistics on uninsured adults with opioid addiction

Opioid addiction is a pervasive problem in the United States, with a large portion of addicts lacking coverage.

Here are eight statistics on uninsured adults with opioid addiction based on Kaiser Family Foundation data.

1. Twenty percent of adults with opioid addiction lack insurance.

2. Forty-percent have private insurance and 30 percent are on Medicaid.

3. Of the uninsured population, 66 percent are white, 18 percent are Hispanic and 10 percent are black.

4. Twenty-two percent of uninsured adults with opioid addiction are female, with the remainder (78 percent) being male.

5. Adults aged 18 to 34 are the largest cohort of uninsured opioid addicts at 62 percent.

6. More than 60 percent of uninsured nonelderly adults with opioid addiction work.

7. Of those who work, 58 percent have low incomes.

8. More than 50 percent of this population has had a mental illness in the past year with more than 20 percent having a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia.
