5 things to know about Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage is a popular market for private insurers, according to Forbes.

1. Total enrollment in Medicare Advantage plans is expected to double by the end of the decade.

2. In Medicare Advantage, private insurers manage care for more than 30 percent of the 55 million beneficiaries of Medicare.

3. Each day, 10,000 more people become eligible for Medicare with the United State's 65-and-older population increasing rapidly.

4. Aetna proposed to acquire Humana, the number one insurer for Medicare Advantage, for $37 billion. The acquisition would give Aetna access to Humana's Medicare Advantage volumes.

5. President George W. Bush's administration created Medicare Advantage as a private health insurance option for Medicare beneficiaries.
