5 statistics on US public's view of Medicaid funding

Many Americans support the government providing funds to Medicaid expansion states, a new Kaiser Family Foundation poll found.

Here are five statistics to note:

1. Eighty-four percent of the U.S. public supports the government providing funds to states that expanded Medicaid.

2. Across party lines, 93 percent of Democrats, 83 percent of Independents and 71 percent of Republicans support continued federal funding.

3. Fifty-eight percent of Americans say Medicaid is "very" or "somewhat" important for them and their family.

4. Regarding Medicaid's current financing structure, 71 percent say it should remain as it currently stands and 26 percent say the government should change Medicaid to cap federal funding and give states the authority to decide who and what services they want to cover.

5. Of those polled, 60 percent view Medicaid as health insurance and 37 percent equate Medicaid to welfare.
