40 Idaho Cities Consider Becoming Self-Insured

Almost 40 cities in Idaho have agreed to consider a plan to lower health insurance costs by becoming self-insured, according to a Magic Valley report.

The cities, which include Hailey, Jerome, Burley, Shoshone and Paul, would agree to become their own insurers, and employee health benefits would become self-funded. Under this plan, the cities would manage the funds and any claims.

The city of Burley has been self-insured for 12 years, according to the report. City Administrator Mark Mitton said the plan has allowed the city to track claims information, which helps officials understand which health issues are driving up costs.

Burley is looking into joining the group of cities, called the Idaho Independent Intergovernmental Authority, because the large group will be able to reduce costs further by leveraging its buying power.
