4 Tips for Healthcare CEOs to Maintain Billing Compliance

Healthcare providers and executives should closely monitor their Medicare compliance to avoid recovery payments from the Medicare Fraud Strike Force, which has collected $4.8 billion in false payments since 2007, according to Health Leaders Media.

Here are four tips for maintaining billing and coding compliance.

1. Hire qualified compliance professionals. Though a simple step, having experienced professionals with authority to fix problems managing your compliance program will fix problems before they occur. Give them the space to do their job without interference.

2. Make time for your chief compliance officer. Meet on a regular basis to stay abreast of your compliance program and aware of any problems or complications.

3. Request audit reports. Audit reports will show you the work being done to address issues from the Office of the Inspector General Work Plan. Reviewing these reports will let you know if anyone is interfering with compliance.

4. Keep the board informed. Allow the compliance officer to deliver all compliance reports to the board. CEOs should meet with the officer prior to the board meeting and get likeminded on the report's information.
