The data breaks down Medicaid/CHIP coverage for 2015, the most recent year available. States are ranked by the percentage of residents with Medicaid/CHIP coverage. Overall, 15.7 percent of U.S. residents are Medicaid/CHIP beneficiaries.

1. New Mexico: 25.8 percent
2. California: 21.3 percent
3. District of Columbia: 21 percent
4. West Virginia: 20.7 percent
5. New York: 20 percent
6. Kentucky: 19.8 percent
7. Arkansas: 19.5 percent
8. Mississippi: 19 percent
9. Vermont: 18.9 percent
10. Oregon: 18.3 percent
