Researchers Lead Hand Hygiene Program With Positive Reinforcement

Researchers have implemented a hand hygiene program driven by a behavioral change approach to increase hand hygiene compliance, according to a study published in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology.

The hand hygiene program was packaged with several initiatives. It included access to alcohol sanitizer, education as well as ongoing audit and feedback. The program was also supplemented with behavior modification practices, such as immediate positive reinforcement as well as annually changing incentives.

The researchers report the program has resulted in significant and sustained improvements in hand hygiene compliance.
