Researchers Find Positive Relationship Between Patient Safety Culture, Fewer Adverse Outcomes

Research findings suggest a more positive patient safety culture leads to fewer adverse events in hospitals, according to a study published in the Journal of Patient Safety.

Researchers performed multiple regressions to study the relationships between 15 patient safety culture variables and adverse clinical events based on eight risk-adjusted patient safety indicators from 179 hospitals. All patient safety culture data were collected from 2005-2006, and all patient safety indicators data were collected in 2005.

Study results showed nearly all of the relationships tested negative, and seven (47 percent) of the 15 relationships were statistically significant. All significant relationships indicated that hospitals with a more positive patient safety culture scores had lower rates of in-hospital complications or adverse events, as measured by the patient safety indicators.
