The purpose of the National Patient Safety Goals is to implement measureable goals to improve patient safety. The goals cover six areas:

•    Identify patients correctly
•    Improve staff communication
•    Use medicines safely
•    Prevent infection
•    Identify patient safety risks
•    Prevent mistakes in surgery

Each category includes at least one specific goal to boost safety. For instance, in order to identify patient safety risks, hospitals should find out which patients are most likely to try to commit suicide.
