An article published in the Joint Commission's Journal on Quality and Patient Safety examines how checklists in electronic health records can help reduce discharge errors.
The article examines a best practice discharge list developed in 2013 using an EHR. The checklist underwent a four phase trial and includes 15 tasks that allow for automatic insertion.
The EHR checklist was able to:
• Remind surgeons to complete discharge tasks
• Improve confidence
• Increase process efficiency
The data shows a strong checklist can improve important discharge task completion.
