Defining the value of bariatric surgery accreditation

Accreditation has long been considered a valuable quality marker in healthcare. Two recent studies highlight the importance of bariatric surgery accreditation, according to a General Surgery News report.

The first study found unaccredited centers to have a higher average length of stay than accredited centers, as a well as a higher rate of complications.

The second study found that after the implementation of the 2006 CMS bariatric accreditation policy, the chance of Medicare patients dying from complications related to bariatric surgery declined 59 percent, according to the report.
