California Department of Health Issues Patient Safety Citations to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital

At a community meeting, local residents expressed their concerns over Salinas (Calif.) Valley Memorial Healthcare System's patient safety practices, according to a Californian report.

Citing two recent citations by the state's Department of Public Health, a former SVMH nurse questioned the health system's ability to deliver safe patient care. According to the news report, the health system was dinged twice by state regulators — once for lack of documentation on operating room cleaning and once for lack of documentation confirming replacement workers' tuberculosis testing.

Hospital officials responded that those citations were merely paperwork issues and patient safety was never threatened, according to the news report. The community meeting raised other concerns, including the health system's pending financial audit.
