AAHHS accredits 1st critical access hospital: 5 key notes

The Accreditation Association for Hospitals/Health Systems granted its first-ever critical access hospital accreditation.

Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Iowa, was the first facility to receive AAHHS accreditation after an onsite surveyor. The hospital complied with the AAHHS Accreditation Handbook for Critical Access Hospitals.

Here are five key notes on the accreditation:

1. AAHHS provides critical access hospitals a collaborative, consultative and peer-reviewed accreditation.

2. AAHHS surveyors have an in-depth review process to ensure smaller hospitals adopt the best practices and deliver optimal patient care.

3. AAHHS is a sister organization to Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. AAHHS is moving closer to achieving deemed status recognition for accrediting critical access hospitals from CMS after this first accreditation.

4. AAHHS launched a pilot survey programs with rural hospitals in July 2013 to help create the AAHHS standards. There were two phases of surveys addressing both administrative services and physical environment in addition to clinical and administrative services.

5. There are several small hospitals to receive accreditation under the Accreditation Handbook for Hospitals and Health System, but Decatur County Hospital is the first to receive accreditation.

"We believe our patients deserve the best," said Suzanne Conner, CEO of Decatur County Hospital. "When you see our certificate of accreditation, you will know that AAHHS, an independent, not-for-profit organization, has closely examined our facility and procedures. It means we, as an organization, care enough about our patients to strive for the highest level of care possible."
