AAAHC names Dr. Stephen Martin CEO — 5 things to know

The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care appointed Stephen A. Martin Jr., PhD, MPH, as CEO.

He will replace retiring CEO John Burke.

"Dr. Martin has the energy and enthusiasm to help us improve healthcare quality through accreditation and the ability to embrace and drive change for the betterment of AAAHC," said AAAHC Board Chairman W. Patrick Davey, MD, MBA. "His branding and marketing expertise will help us take the profile of the organization to the next level."

Here are five things to know about Dr. Martin:

1. He has more than 18 years of governmental and non-governmental experience in healthcare and public health.

2. His most recent position was executive director of the Association for Community Health Improvement at the American Hospital Association.

3. Dr. Martin will assume his role as AAAHC CEO on June 15.

4. In addition to his work with the AHA, Dr. Martin has been health commissioner and COO for Cook County Department of Public Health in Chicago.

5. Dr. Martin's responsibilities as AAAHC CEO will include leading the Institute for Quality Improvement and overseeing the Accreditation Association for Hospitals/Health Systems.

Dr. Martin is a fellow of the Leadership Greater Chicago and Institute of Medicine of Chicago and serves on the board of the Council on Education for Public Health.
