Here are three steps to effective implementation of surgical checklists in the ambulatory surgery environment, according to the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care Institute for Quality Improvement.

1.    Engage checklist users through staff education.
2.    Emphasize the importance of participation from each member of the healthcare team.
3.    Show evidence that checklists improve patient safety, teamwork, communication and job satisfaction.
