5 Tips to Perfect Credentialing Timing

The Joint Commission offers tips to improve accreditation readiness for ambulatory organizations on its blog, Ambulatory Buzz. The following are tips on the blog for keeping credentialing on schedule from Susan Herrold, MN, RN, and Mary Pat Hall, MSN, RN, both ambulatory surveyors for The Joint Commission.

1. Licenses should be primary sourced both when they expire and before recredentialing.

2. The person responsible for the credentialing process must be properly trained, understand all steps of the process and understand how each step fits into the larger picture.

3. All necessary information should be on hand during the process, or practitioners will not be able to be recredentialed.

4. Use data sheets with reminders to keep the process on schedule.

5. Plan early, and put the organization on a recredentialing schedule with sufficient time to correct for missing documentation or errors.
