5 Most Challenging Joint Commission Requirements for ASCs

The Joint Commission has compiled a list of the top five Joint Commission requirements most frequently identified as "not compliant" for accredited organizations and certified programs in 2012.

For ambulatory care, the following five requirements were the most challenging, based on noncompliance rate:

1. The organization grants initial, renewed or revised clinical privileges to individuals who are permitted by law and the organization to practice independently (HR.02.01.03) — 52 percent.

2. The organization safely stores medications (MM.03.01.01) — 34 percent.

3. The organization reduces the risk of infections associated with medical equipment,
devices and supplies (IC.02.02.01) — 31 percent.

4. The organization identifies risks for acquiring and transmitting infections (IC.01.03.01) — 24 percent.

5. The organization manages risks related to hazardous materials and waste (EC.02.02.01) — 18 percent.
