Senators Klobuchar and Collins Discuss Drug Shortages on Senate Floor

Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) addressed ongoing drug shortages on the Senate floor on Jan. 26, according to an ASA release.

The senators commented on the continuing need for solutions to the drug shortage crisis. Sen. Klobuchar discussed the introduction of the Preserving Access to Life-Saving Medications Act, which would require drug manufacturers to provide early notification to the FDA whenever a shortage may occur. She said this requirement would help the FDA to work with pharmacy groups, drug manufacturers and healthcare providers on managing and preparing for shortages.

She said the bill also requires the FDA to develop an evidence-based list of drugs that are vulnerable to shortages. The FDA would then work with manufacturers to plan for potential problems that could result in a shortage.

ASA continues to support the bill, S. 296, and other efforts to combat drug shortages.
