Noted anesthesiologist Ronald F. Albrecht, MD, 80, died Aug. 31.

1. Dr. Albrecht held several prestigious positions throughout his career.

He served at the Bethesda, Md.-based National Institutes of Health for two years. He was the head of anesthesiology at Chicago-based Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center; the head and chair of anesthesiology at Chicago-based University of Illinois; and a professor emeritus of anesthesiology at University of Illinois after his retirement in 2007.

2. Dr. Albrecht was one of the longest tenured department heads at University of Illinois.

3. Dr. Albrecht held several leadership roles throughout his career. He was president of the University of Illinois' hospital staff, Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists, Chicago Society of Anesthesiology and Association of Anesthesiology Chairs.

4. During his career, he published more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals and trained more than 500 anesthesiology residents.
