How Healthcare Trends Can Lead to the Expansion of Anesthesiologists' Roles

Hospitals and health systems are expanding their activities into areas beyond the traditional acute-care services and two of these new areas are post-acute care and the payer function, according to an Anesthesia Business Consultants blog post.

The blog post notes Foley & Lardner's Health Care Law Today blog entry that lists five areas in this space which signal opportunities, including creative partnerships between hospitals and post-acute care — PAC — providers, inside and outside Pioneer and MSSP (Medicare Shared Savings Program) ACOs.

According to Tony Mira, president and CEO of Anesthesia Business Consultants, this area is potentially most relevant to anesthesiologists. Anesthesiologists' typically contribute greatly in the preoperative phase. However, this new focus on PAC could lead to anesthesiologists helping transition patients from hospital to home care.

It will become increasingly advantageous for anesthesiologists to participate in opening up services that can generate income, according to the blog post.
