General Anesthesia Safer Than Regional for Liver Cancer Patients

General anesthesia is safer than regional anesthesia for patients undergoing minimally invasive treatment for liver cancer, according to a study published in Anesthesia & Analgesia.

The risk of recurrent cancer appears lower with general anesthesia, according to the report. The researchers evaluated the effects of type of anesthesia on recurrence risk in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common type of liver cancer. The patients underwent a non-surgical procedure called percutaneous radiofrequency ablation, which uses a small probe placed into the liver to destroy cancerous cells.

The researchers examined outcomes for 179 patients and found that cancer recurrence rate was lower with general anesthesia. The risk of recurrent HCC was about four times higher for patients who received epidural anesthesia.
