A study presented at the 2016 Annual PostGraduate Assembly in Anesthesiology, Dec. 9 through Dec. 13 in New York City, examined salary data across 15 medical specialties, Anesthesiology News reports.
Lead study author and Centre County-based Pennsylvania State University researcher Julia Caldwell, MD, and colleagues conducted the research.
Here's what you should know.
1. The national median salary across all specialties is $80,000 lower for all women.
2. Fields with high levels of female participation have lower salaries for women than those specialties with low levels of participation
3. Dr. Caldwell said over 30-year careers, men earn approximately $5 million more than woman. Men are also four times more likely to become a department chair.
4. Anesthesiology is the only specialty with average or high female participation rates. Female anesthesiologists' mean salary was $428,208 which is higher than the median $333,163 across the female participation group.
