Dispelling the myths: 10 questions about ICD-10 answered for anesthesiologists

In a Communique article, Darlene Helmer, vice president of provider education and training at Anesthesia Business Consultants, notes that rumors about ICD-10 are running rampant among healthcare providers and the myths about the new coding system needs to be dispelled.

Ms. Helmer discusses 10 questions to give healthcare providers, particularly anesthesiologists, a clearer picture of ICD-10 and changes its implementation may bring. She offers answers to the following 10 questions:

1. Who developed ICD-10?
2. What is the ICD-10 compliance date?
3. Why don't we wait for ICD-11?
4. What is the impact on CPT codes?
5. How is ICD-10 implementation related to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act?
6. Why should we change to ICD-10?
7. What are the benefits of ICD-10 CM adoption?
8. Can we just use the crosswalk from ICD-9 to ICD-10?
9. What about using external cause codes, signs/symptoms and unspecified codes?
10. Where do we start ICD-10 training for our physicians?
