Despite increasing number of female anesthesiologists, pay gap persists between genders: 7 insights

A new RAND study found that while the number of female anesthesiologists in the field is increasing, the pay for women is lower than the salary received by male anesthesiologists.

Here are seven insights:

1. The RAND study analyzed a 2013 survey of members of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

2. It shows that 40 percent of anesthesiologists under the age of 36 were female, a substantial increase from 2007, when 26 percent were women.

3. However, the study found that male anesthesiologists earned 29 percent more than female anesthesiologists.

4. The reported average annual income for men was $403,616 in 2013, as compared to $313,074 for women.

5. But, after accounting for experience, employer type and hours, the wage gap between the genders was reduced from 29 percent to 7 percent.

6. Additionally, the study shows that female anesthesiologists have different employment and compensation arrangements than their male counterparts.

7. The study was published in Anesthesiology, the official journal of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
