Compensation, top priorities & more — 14 key takeaways on the anesthesia labor market l 2016

Somnia Anesthesia released its annual study on the anesthesia labor market for 2016.

Sixty-two percent of survey respondents were anesthesiologists and 38 percent were certified registered nurse anesthetists. Respondents answered questions related to their practices.

Here are 12 key things to know:

1. Anesthesia professionals believe while future demand might be worrisome, there is a growing number of anesthesiologists and CRNAs.

2. Staffing models that utilize CRNAs for 30 percent to 60 percent of cases can significantly ease demand on anesthesiologists, respondents reported.

3. Seven out of 10 survey participants held leadership positions, with more than a third of respondents completing fellowships.

4. The Northeast and Western United States have the greatest demands for anesthesiologists and CRNAs.

5. Approximately 80.4 percent of anesthesiologists and 69.7 percent of CRNAs have more than 11 years of clinical experience.

6. Most respondents held licenses in multiple states. Thirty-one percent of active license holders were in the southern United States.

7. These seven states had high numbers of anesthesiologists and CRNAs:

  • Florida
  • Illinois
  • Michigan
  • Ohio
  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • Texas

8. The three states with the most anesthesiologists were California, Texas and Michigan. The three states with the most CRNAs were Texas, Florida and Pennsylvania.

9. Anesthesiologist average compensation:

  • 43.4 percent make under $350,000
  • 20.8 percent make between $351,000 and $375,000
  • 5.7 percent make between $376,000 and $400,000
  • 7.6 percent make between $401,000 and $425,000
  • 22.6 percent make more than $426,000

10. CRNA average compensation:

  • 40.6 percent make under $175,000
  • 21.9 percent make between $175,000 and $200,000
  • 12.5 percent make between $201,000 and $225,000
  • 9.4 percent make between $224,000 and $250,000
  • 15.6 percent make more than $251,000

11. Top three anesthesiologist job priorities:

  • Work schedule: 50.9 percent
  • Job location: 49.1 percent
  • Compensation: 47.2 percent

12. Top three CRNA job priorities:

  • Compensation: 54.5 percent
  • Work schedule: 48.5 percent
  • Practice setting: 39.4 percent

13. Approximately 69.4 percent of anesthesiologists practiced in a hospital, 25.9 percent practiced in an ASC and 4.7 percent practiced in an office-based surgery suite.

14. Most anesthesiologists and CRNAs prefer the care team model over other staffing models.
