Blue Care Network, Health Alliance Plan delay anesthesia preauthorization policies: 5 key notes

Southfield, Mich.-based Blue Care Network and Detroit-based Health Alliance Plan of Michigan backed off on a proposal requiring providers to receive preauthorization for full anesthesia services before colonoscopies and similar procedures, Crain's Detroit Business reports.

Here's what you should know.

1. The policy would've made it harder for beneficiaries to have payers cover anesthesia services.

2. The payers justified the policies because of anesthesia and anesthesia services' rising costs.

3. Blue Care Network and Health Alliance Plan of Michigan indefinitely delayed both policies.

4. Blue Care and Health Alliance Plan of Michigan tabled the proposals due to CMS guidance and three Michigan physician organizations voicing opposition.

5. Blue Care aims to review the policy later in the year after CMS releases new guidelines and claim data.
