Note: The Occupational Employment Statistics survey covers wage and salary workers only and does not include the self employed and owners, proprietors and partners of unincorporated businesses, such as partners in medical practices. As a result, OES wage estimates may not be representative of all workers in an occupation if wages for the self employed differ from those of wage and salary workers for a particular occupation. The data for physicians also include residents, who may typically earn lower wages. Because the self-employed are excluded, our employment estimates generally will be lower than those that include self-employed workers. Data from the BLS Employment Projections program, which are adjusted for self employment, estimate that there are about 39,500 anesthesiologists nationally, about 15 percent above the OES estimate of 34,230. Also, someone who trained as a physician but who is currently carrying out the duties of an administrator would be classified as an administrator in the OES data.
