ASA selects DeLaine Schmitz as new executive of AQI — 6 facts

The American Society of Anesthesiologists selected DeLaine Schmitz as the executive of the Anesthesia Quality Institute.

Here are six facts:

1. DeLaine Schmitz previously served as director of quality for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

2. ASA officials believe Ms. Schmitz will ensure the ASA and AQI continue to meet patient needs while maintaining quality standards.

3. The AQI was established in 2008 by the ASA to allow for practice-based quality management through quality data feedback and education. AQI aims to enhance the quality care for patients, lower anesthesia morality and limit anesthesia incidents.

4. DeLaine Schmitz will devise a plan to achieve the defined strategic direction and identify necessary resources to meet AQI's future needs.

5. Additionally, she will focus on registry operations in the AQI which consists of reporting Physician Quality Reporting System data through the Qualified Clinical Data Registry. She also will support practice-based quality improvement, facilitate research through the use of large data and enhance patient safety.

6. DeLaine Schmitz has nine years of experience as director of quality for both the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and The Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
