Anesthesiologist House Candidate Gets Help From Specialty Society

Anesthesiologist Andy Harris, MD, a Republican House candidate in Maryland and opponent of healthcare reform, was recently promoted in a 60-second radio ad by the American Society of Anesthesiologists, according to a report by Politico.

The ASA ad said Dr. Harris, a state senator challenging incumbent Democrat Frank Kratovil, is someone who "knows better than most what we need for real healthcare reform."

Dr. Harris, who heads the society's Maryland chapter, has also received financial support from PACs for the ASA as well as the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Academy of Otlolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery ENT and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

Meanwhile, California Democrat Ami Bera, MD, an internist who is challenging incumbent Rep. Dan Lungren, has been funded by PACs for the American College of Radiology, the American College of Surgeons and other physicians groups.
