AMA Reviews Anesthesia Physician Supervision Requirements

The American Medical Association has been instructed by the AMA House of Delegates to identify and review states whose governors have opted out of the federal Medicare physician supervision requirements for anesthesia provision, according to an American Medical News report.

The AMA was asked to analyze data to determine whether those states have seen an increase in patient access to anesthesia services. The analysis would include data on the type and complexity of care provided by all non-physicians, as compared with the care provided by physicians and physician-supervised anesthesia care teams.

The AMA has adopted policies stating physicians are best-qualified to lead the healthcare team, but that non-physician practitioners are also valuable additions to the team.
