67% of pediatric anesthesiologists have subspecialty board certification — 5 demographic statistics

A study in Anesthesia & Analgesia investigated demographic characteristics of pediatric anesthesiologists in the United States.

The researchers identified 4,048 pediatric anesthesiologists in the United States, based on data from the American Board of Anesthesiology, National Provider Identifier registry, Healthgrades.com database, and the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia membership list. These physicians represent 8.8 percent of the physician anesthesiology workforce, according to the researchers.

Here are five things to know about pediatric anesthesiologists:

1. The median age was 49 years old.

2. The majority, 56.4 percent, were men.

3. About two-thirds were subspecialty board-certified in pediatric anesthesiology.

4. About one-third had an academic affiliation.

5. Pediatric anesthesiologists are located in a diverse array of states throughout the country, however, they tend to be clustered in urban areas.
